Western Michigan football spring practice offers quick glimpse of team – MLive.com

KALAMAZOO, MI — Western Michigan football fans were treated to gorgeous weather at Waldo Stadium Saturday and were able to witness what new head coach Tim Lester brings to the team.

The Broncos took to the field and warmed up then stretched for the fans before going into positions drills and finally some scrimmage time.

Media relations staff asked that reporters not describe the plays and formations that were seen throughout the spring practices, including the scrimmage, but Lester said he was pleased with how the day went.

“It was good,” Lester said. “There’s a lot of things to teach them and there’s a long way to go when you’re looking at a brand new offense and a brand new defense. But in our first 15 opportunities I think we took advantage of every second we’ve had.”

Lester said they had a nice mix of first, second and third string players in the scrimmage and liked how they reacted to each other.

“I really liked to see the offense and defense bounce back,” Lester said. “I love after the offense scores a touchdown to see how the defense comes off the sideline and I really think there was a good back and forth.”

Quarterbacks Tom Flacco and Jon Wassink both said their continuing competition was going well.

“I feel it went well, and the biggest thing is just that the team gets better,” Wassink said. “We’ve just got to carry that into the fall.”

Wassink said he felt like he got better over the spring and that offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Kevin Johns was a big part of that.

“He’s a really good coach and a really good guy and he’s just trying to help all of us quarterbacks to develop,” Wassink said.

Flacco said he doesn’t feel any different than he did during the spring game last year in regards to the competition.

“I feel you just go out here, you focus on what you’re doing and you play your game,” Flacco said. “We’ve been preaching all season that it’s a player-led team. Everyone’s reacted really well to the change.”

The Broncos will open their season at USC on September 2.
