Like every other college football program who had former players selected in the 2017 NFL Draft, Pittsburgh took to social media in the days following the draft to tout their draftees.

The Panthers’ five selections — their most since five in 2011 — were led by running back James Conner, a third-round pick of the Steelers, and guard Dorian Johnson, the Cardinals’ fourth-round pick. Though Pitt didn’t crack the top 10 for the most selections (tied for 11th) and were behind three ACC teams (Miami, Clemson and North Carolina), they still fared better than a couple rivals, Penn State (one) and West Virginia (two).

On Friday, they boasted about the draft victories over the Nittany Lions and Mountaineers on Twitter, which was far from unusual or unexpected. However, they also mocked Maryland and Rutgers, two struggling programs in other conferences who may compete for some of the same recruits but are far from rivals or even relevant to Pitt fans.

Pitt and Maryland have five all-time meetings and zero since 1992, and while the Panthers played Rutgers 30 times since 1981, the teams haven’t met since 2012, when they were Big East members.
